Chiropractic Care For Neck Dislocation
A neck dislocation, or cervical dislocation, means that a ligament injury in the neck occurred. Specifically, two or more of the adjoining spine bones separated and caused instability. Neck dislocations are not uncommon because the cervical spine is the most mobile portion of the spinal column and therefore is vulnerable to injury. At Massapequa Pain Management & Rehabilitation, we can provide chiropractic care for neck dislocations. Our Nassau County chiropractor can recommend and carry out treatment to get the neck into place and relieve pain.
Neck Dislocation Symptoms
A neck injury, such as dislocation, can result from trauma from incidents such as car accidents, sports collisions, or falls. Injuries involving the cervical spine can also impact the upper extremities because the nerves in the neck also control the upper extremities. Symptoms that can help determine if your neck injury is a dislocation include:
- Intense pain in the neck.
- Pain that radiates down the shoulders and arms.
- Numbness or tingling in the upper extremities.
- Weakness in the upper extremities.
- Stiffness in the upper extremities.
Treatment of Neck Dislocation
Our Nassau County chiropractor will first perform a physical examination to see if the neck is dislocated and determine the severity of the injury. Our chiropractor may use a brace on the neck to immobilize the head. A neurological exam will be administered after the evaluation, and imaging studies such as x-rays, a CT scan, or MRI can be ordered.
The imaging tests help assess the dislocation and determine if surgical intervention is required. If surgery is not needed, chiropractic care and physical therapy can be prescribed to help the patient practice spinal mobilization and strength-building exercises. The goal of rehabilitation is to make the muscles stabilizing the neck stronger to support the displaced vertebrae in the neck.
