Does Warm Weather Contribute To Joint Pain?

While summer is a time in which many of us love to enjoy the warm, beautiful weather, for some people, the increase in temperature brings an increase in joint pain along with it. At Massapequa Pain Management & Rehabilitation, we understand the devastation this can bring. That is why our team wants to inform people about the link between warm weather and joint pain, as well as what can be done to prevent it.

Problems With Heat

At some point in your life, you’ve probably heard someone say their joints begin to ache when a storm is approaching. The same thing can happen to people when temperatures begin to rise. When the air becomes hotter and more humid it can cause the tissues around your joints to expand. This expansion is what causes the resulting joint pain that many people experience at this time of year.

Mitigation Efforts

Although you can’t change the temperature and humidity levels, there are steps you can take to prevent them from causing joint pain and swelling. The faster you adjust to the summer months, the sooner you can get back to being pain-free. For the best mitigation methods, our team recommends the following:

  • Remain in areas that are air-conditioned on days when it is especially hot out. Keeping cool will help to reduce your swelling.
  • In the summer months, you’ll need to put a greater emphasis on staying hydrated than you normally would. As it gets hotter, the fluids in your body will diminish quicker. Increasing your water intake will help in keeping you hydrated and fighting off inflammation.
  • Listening to your body may be the most important part of staying pain-free. Be sure to never overexert yourself, as doing so is a surefire way to sustain an injury.

Outlook

Unfortunately, even after taking precautionary methods, summer joint pain may still occur. If you’re unable to stop the joint pain caused by the heat each summer, our team at Massapequa Pain Management & Rehabilitation will be there to help. We’ll perform a full assessment of your condition to help determine which of the following treatment methods will work best for you:

  • Physical medicine & rehab.
  • Physical therapy.
  • Chiropractic care.
  • Orthopedic services.
