Many of us are eager to get back outside after spending fall and winter cooped up inside. When it comes to working out in the spring/summer, common mistakes can potentially lead to dangerous health risks. At Massapequa Pain Management & Rehabilitation, we would like to share a list of workout mistakes you should avoid before sweating it out in the warmer weather.
Only Drinking Water When Thirsty
Hydration is critical, especially if you’re working out in the heat. It would be best if you didn’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. When you exercise out in the sun, your body is using more water to regulate your temperature. If you haven’t had enough water, fatigue can set in and hinder your performance. Make sure to keep a bottle of water handy for your long workouts, and drink some before heading out. We recommend avoiding drinking coffee before working out this spring/summer because it can act as a diuretic and cause more fluid loss.
Not Eating After a Workout
If you’re working out in the warmer weather, your body will sweat more. Your body needs fuel to work efficiently and needs to refuel after a workout. You should eat a meal a couple of hours before your workout, and after your workout, you should eat right after to replenish your body.
Skipping Sunscreen
Even if you’re working out for a short time, you shouldn’t forget the sunscreen. Every sunburn can increase your risk of skin cancer, so you should be applying and reapplying as needed to avoid sunburns.
Overdoing It
The warmer weather can be more motivating to stay fit, but going too hard can bring your fitness journey to a halt and cause burnout. The heat can cause you to ignore any sluggish feelings, but you shouldn’t ignore feelings of exhaustion. Listen to your body to avoid injury. If you become injured this spring/summer, our team is here to help you recover.
