Men’s Health Month

It’s finally June; the perfect time of year to get up and get active. Keeping yourself active and in shape over the summer should be a top priority for everyone! The month of June is recognized as Men’s Health Month according to the list of national health observances. That’s why here at Massapequa Pain Management & Rehabilitation, we celebrate in an effort to raise awareness on how men can be healthy and happy all summer long!

Common Injuries:

Men suffer from a long list of painful ailments and injuries. One of the more common injuries for men comes from the hands, where finger and wrist fractures are exceedingly common. This is due to many men playing in sports that require sudden stops or impacts of the hands, affecting athletes like:

  • Basketball point guards
  • Volleyball players
  • Football players.

Additionally, soft tissue injuries are extremely common in men. Tears to the Achilles tendon, biceps or pectorals, and ACL can put an athlete out of operation for months while it heals. Physical therapy is paramount to getting those kinds of injuries healed in the correct way, so that they may get back to the same strength and ability as they had before the accident.

Nutrition:

Aside from putting in the physical work, it is also important to know what healthy foods are good for your recovery and future strength. Maintaining a healthy diet is a critical part of the recovery process. It is recommended that you focus on building a diet with lots of lean protein, fruits, and vegetables and whole foods. You’ll want to include some of the following foods onto your next grocery list:

  • Nuts
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Salmon
  • Chicken Breast
  • Chickpeas
  • Quinoa
  • Beans

Additionally, make sure that you get your daily dose of Vitamin D in there with delicious options such as eggs, cereal, tuna, and of course, orange juice.

Moreover, the key to keeping healthy is to keep moving every single day. Physical inactivity can lead to Diabetes, cancers like prostate cancer, and heart disease which can all sneak up on you when you least expect it. It is up to you to combat these illnesses by staying healthy and active. You can join a workout group to make it social and fun, or develop your own personal routine to keep yourself in check.
